IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW THE FIRST JUMP COURSE IS, HERE I LEAVE YOU A DETAILED REVIEW FROM DANIEL KLEBER

When I first assigned for the course I didn’t know what to expect. A friend who knew Lukas very well recommended it to me and I figured I would give it a go.

I didn’t know much about Basejumping at the time. I just knew that it was my dream to Wingsuit Base one day. I reached out to Lukas and he confirmed that there is still a free spot for the upcoming course. He helped me to buy my first base rig and canopy and gave me all the details for the course as well as the preparation for it. I had to do at least 40 pack jobs on my own using a video that Lukas gave me. I also had to read the Book of base and the Base Fatality List.

I was able to ask him questions about the course and general questions about Basejumping. He always took his time to respond in detail. Keep in mind I only knew Lukas from Instagram and WhatsApp at the time. I saw all his videos on Instagram and thought that this guy must be an energy loaded adrenalin junky that likes to bend the boundaries of Basejumping.

When I met Lukas on the first day of the course I was quite surprised, because he was actually quite the opposite of what I expected him to be. Such a calm and relaxed guy. He has this positive vibe that immediately gets you into a good mood, even in the scariest situations. He is very calculated and precautious. He takes his time to explain everything in detail and answer all questions you have. That changed my perception of him immediately and the nervousness I felt prior to the course just vanished. He isn’t an adrenalin junky, instead he is a very calculated professional that loves to fly and knows what the fuck he’s doing.

In the first two days we learned all the theory that is necessary in order to jump safely. We learned everything about the gear - how to use it, how it’s built and how to maintain it. We learned the difference between jumping techniques like slider up, slider down, stowed, hand held, static line, etc. We learned how to evaluate weather and jumping sites. We learned about mistakes that can happen in base jumping and also watched a lot of footage of things going wrong.

Lukas also made sure that every single one of us is able to pack his parachute perfectly. He showed us the best packing technique and even taught us how to pack without clamps.

After all the theory lessons, we did some physical exercises like practicing how to untwist ourselves in a harness. And the day before our first jumps we practiced how to properly perform a jump using a bungee rope on a mockup. Lukas made sure that everybody had it 100% right, before giving us the ok for the first jumps.

In the following 5 days we performed our first jumps. It can be compared to leveling up in the AFF course. You start by doing the easiest technique and if you perform well, you can move on to the next technique. We started by doing PCAs and Static Line jumps, proceeded to hand held and then to stowed. Even unpacked jumps were on the agenda. We also had to perform target landings and 180 maneuvers to practice avoiding cliff strikes. We did around 30 jumps off the bridge before moving on to other objects. During the last couple of days in Croatia we also did an antenna, a building and a slider down cliff.

The time in Croatia was just great. We had a lot of fun learning theory, doing our first jumps and always ate in really nice restaurants every evening. Lukas even organized a massage for us on one of the last days. We all became very good friends during that time and developed a very unique group dynamic.

After that it was time for Brento. We drove all the way from Croatia to Italy and had dinner together while discussing the plan for the next days. We repeated the theory for terminal jumps before learning how to pack slider up. After that we were ready for the first jumps from Brento.

The days in Italy were structured like follows. We did two terminal jumps of Brento in the morning. After each jump, we watched the videos and Lukas gave us direct feedback. Afterwards we had a couple hours to chill, have lunch, drive around Italy and have a swim in one of the lakes nearby. In the evening the group met again and we did one or two slider down cliffs that were in the area. This continued for 6 days and at the end everybody was well experienced in slider down and slider up jumping. We all learned how to fly two piece tracksuits (which are obligatory for the course).

Looking back at those two weeks I have to say it was the best time of my life so far. Learning how to base jump is something so special and it is very important to have a mentor who is empathetic, calm and patient. Lukas has all of these qualities. And in addition he is also one of the nicest people I have ever met. A pure soul that found his purpose in teaching other humans how to fly.

After the course I was able to open exits on my own. Now it has been 10 months since the course and I already opened around 20 exits in my area.

Even after the course Lukas is still keeping close contact and answers all questions I have related to BASE jumping. I can reach out to him whenever I need information and he always takes his time to answer my calls or messages. He even gave me the pins for a lot of exits in my area so I have something to jump.

If you want to learn how to BASE jump in a safe and fun way, I deeply recommend you the Base Jumpers Without Borders course, lead by Lukas Loibl.

You will become a base jumper that is able to evaluate sites, take care of his own equipment, open exits and perform well in flying suits. You will have all necessary knowledge to perform slider down and slider up jumps for all types of objects.
